Writing - sentence types

1. simple : 1 indepent clause
   • Layla studied biology. 或 => My friend Layla studied biology in university.
   • Even with the weather being that nasty, the couple and their families decided to go ahead with the wedding as planned.
     • Phrase : Even with the weather being that nasty
     • S: the couple and their families
     • V: decided
     • O: to go ahead with the wedding as planned
2. compound : 2 indepent clauses join by conjuction
   • I arrived at the office at 9, and my assistant came 10 minutes later.
   • She was sick so I told her to go home.
3. complex : 1 ind + 1 (more) dependent + noun/adj/adv clauses
   • John retired when he turned 65.
     • adv clause : when he turned 65.
   • Whether you agree with me or not makes little difference to our investors, who, by the way, are the ones most affected by whatever mistakes we make.
     • S : whether you agree with me or not
     • V : makes
     • adj clause (describing investors) S : who; V: are
     • noun clause : whether mistake we make
4. compound-complex :
   • Bill voted against the measure because he felt that it wasn’t strong enough, but he also offered to continue discussions, which we will do next week.
     • S + V : Bill … the measure
     • adv clause : because he felt
     • noun clause : that it wasn’t strong enough
     • adj clause : which we will do next week

Other

• What Shron forgot to mention was that her husband was the CEO of Microsoft and makes a lot of money, which is why she can afford all of her holidays.
  • S (noun clause, dependent clause) : What Sharon forgot to mention
  • V : was

Inversion (v before s)

除了問句 e.g. Are you sure? 倒裝句的使用時機 - 特定句子才能使用

Negative :

• Not only did he win, but he also broke the record.
• Under no circumstances should you call her.
• … nor do we expect him to

Postive :

• Should (If) you need any help, … (should 就像是正式點的 if)
• Had (If) I known you were coming, … (if I had known you were coming…) (縮短及更正式)
• John speaks Chinese, as does Lucy. (so does Lucy = Lucy does as well) (縮短)
• More important than love is money. (money is more important than love).
• Here comes Jane. (Jane come here) (更 natural)
• Man, is it cold out! (強調你的感覺)

Expressions with way

• go all the way : have sex (slang in movie or life) 或想要完成某事
• to be in a bad way : feel bad
• to have a way with sth/sb : very good at sth/sb
• way off (the mark) : 大大地誤解某個事實 e.g. You are way off.
• make way : 借過; moving forward
• way out there : crazy idea; 做白日夢
• be on your way : (正式) leave e.g. Excuse me, can you please be on your way?
• be on my way : (正式) I’m coming over.
